Case: COOP

Together with Green Cargo the retail giant COOP has moved a large amount of goods from road to rail. Coop is the first food retailer in Sweden to transfer such a large quantity of truck shipments onto trains.

The cooperation is a breakthrough for the rail freight industry. At present it is the long distance between Helsingborg - Stockholm - Helsingborg which the solution covers. This has resulted in 350 fewer trucks on the road every week and a reduced carbon footprint from Coop.

There are two specific Coop trains transporting trailers through the country. Coop has invested in a 100 trailers for the movement of goods from suppliers in southern Sweden and Denmark. Green Cargo runs these Coop trains and has invested in wagons which can carry two trailers per wagon.

Five trains a week will carry frozen, chilled and ambient products to approximately ten stores. Green Cargo’s commitment is to have a 98 per cent delivery precision from the first to the last lift.

 - We have signed the Business Climate call and have the goal to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent by 2020. The new solution already entails a reduction in our overall carbon footprint by over 10 percent. In addition, we have a logistics solution that is top class in terms of delivery precision and cost, which will ultimately benefit Coops customers, says Lars Idermark, CEO of KF and The chairman of the board for Coop Sweden.

Coop was awarded the Climate Comet of the Year Award for their commitments to reduce carbon emissions. Green Cargo has established the award to highlight companies which make significant improvements in the climate impact of their logistics.

Coop Sweden AB has retail store chains in the form of Coop Forum, Coop Extra, Coop Konsum, Coop Nära och Coop Bygg. Coop Sweden is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kooperativa Förbundet (KF).
