Green Cargo preparations ahead of a potential pandemic

Green Cargo is a nationwide logistics company which holds major responsibility for ensuring that our society continues to function. We deal with industrial production, import and export, the food industry, communications such as mail deliveries and fuel for the aviation industry. Therefore, we have worked hard to ensure that our operations are affected as little as possible even if a lot of our staff are off sick from work.

This work began in early August and is being coordinated by our pandemic group, which forms part of the Green Cargo crisis organisation.

This is what we have done:

• Each division and staff function has conducted a risk analysis of a hypothetical scenario based on the assumption that 15 per cent of the company's employees will be absent for 6-8 weeks and that during this time, 50 per cent will be absent during the second and third weeks of the period.

• On the basis of these, every division and staff function has compiled detailed contingency plans containing a range of measures relating to how individual operations will deal with the pandemic to keep disruption to a minimum.

• We maintain contact with some 100 train drivers outside Green Cargo who can help us out if so required.

• A pandemic would not be expected to have as much of an impact on all parts of the country at the same time, and we have prepared an option for moving staff to areas where a lot of other staff are off sick.

• We have prepared a plan for hiring additional staff if large numbers of staff are off sick: train drivers, railways station staff, truck drivers and terminal workers.

• We offer all our staff vaccinations against influenza. This will ideally be carried out via our corporate health team, involving visits directly to work sites.

• Plans have been produced for replacement of managers and decision-makers at various levels.

• The general advice of the National Board of Health and Welfare on how to protect against infection has been passed on throughout the entire company via the intranet and posters. The issue will be discussed at work site meetings, and all relevant information from bodies such as the National Board of Health and Welfare will also be communicated via the intranet in future.

• If we have problems with running full-scale operations despite what is outlined above, we will prioritise our transport assignments in consultation with our customers.

• Specific customer information will be provided by Customer Service and account managers as required.

In our capacity as a logistics company and your capacity as a customer, we may both be experiencing uncertainty concerning how our society would function if huge numbers of people were off sick, but please do not doubt that we have prepared for this eventuality in every way possible. Green Cargo will do its utmost to ensure that our transport and logistics assignments function in a way that our customers may reasonably demand even in the event of a crisis.

If you require more detailed information, please contact your account manager or Customer Service.
