Stora Enso is a leading global supplier of renewable solutions within packaging, biomaterials, timber construction and paper. Their products and solutions are found in industries such as construction, retail, food, manufacturing, publishing, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, confectionery, hygiene and textiles. Stora Enso develops and produces solutions based on wood and biomass for a range of industries and applications throughout the world.

Stora Enso’s large-scale production volumes are dependent on reliable rail freight and efficient infrastructure. With its strong focus and highly set goals, sustainability is critical to Stora Enso’s business strategy.

“Climate change requires urgent attention. Sustainability is the entire foundation of our company, of our role as a responsible actor in society and of our ability to contribute to a greener world. The emphasis is on assuming social, environmental and economic responsibility in our production and throughout the value chain. Collaboration along the value chain is a prerequisite to reducing emissions. We value our suppliers’ commitment to measure, report and reduce their emissions,” explains Sara Lannerbro, SVP of Sustainable Sourcing and Logistics at Stora Enso.

The logistics arrangement meets the need for efficient transportation of finished goods, through the optimized loading of customized wagons, large capacity and the possibility of adapting to changing needs. The shipments involve wagon loads for domestic routes and international traffic provided by partners, single-commodity trains to Gothenburg for onward maritime transportation to Zeebrugge in Belgium, as well as shunting services and specially built wagons fully adapted to Stora Enso’s containers.

For Stora Enso, as with many Swedish industries, it is important to offer fossil-free production chains and value chains. Swedish rail constitutes a superior logistics component, with its low climate footprint. In 2021 alone, Green Cargo transported about 1.5 million tonnes of goods by rail on behalf of Stora Enso. By choosing rail in preference to road freight, Stora Enso reduced its carbon emissions by 39,000 tonnes in 2021 alone.
